The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) brought together a number of their community partners as they offered potential students an opportunity to learn more about the nursing program and the potential job opportunities available for its graduates.

“UCQ’s Open House presents a unique opportunity for prospective students to directly engage with both UCQ’s faculty and staff and our community partners at the same event,” commented Justin Williams, Director of Student Services at UCQ and the main organizer of UCQ’s Open House. “We know our program has grown substantially in the past few years, and it was very apparent today with the tremendous turnout at the event."
Held annually, UCQ’s Open House allows prospective students and members of the community to visit campus to learn about UCQ’s Canadian-accredited nursing programs and explore their facilities. In addition to its Master of Nursing program, UCQ offers a bachelor of nursing for students coming straight out of high school. In addition, the Post-Diploma Bachelor of Nursing program affords nurses with a diploma an opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Suni Vinoy was one of the potential students who attended the event. She has been a nurse for 14 years, including 9 years with Hamad. “I know it will be tiring with school and work, but it is worth the effort if it will allow me to upgrade my education”. Hajer Hamad just graduated from grade 12 and she is exciting at the prospect of becoming a nurse. “I have watched nurses and all the good work they do since I was a child, and I have always known that this is the profession for me”.
Phillip Welsh, the head of talent management for Aspetar was at their booth talking with the attendees at the open house. He believes these type of events “are an excellent opportunity for the organization to not only reach out to the community, but to also speak directly with potential nurses who play a critical role in Aspetar’s sports medicine hospital”. Other partners who were represented at the event included Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra Medical and Research Center, and The Supreme Education Council.
UCQ has a reputation for delivering excellence in nursing education, healthcare research, and community engagement. This is where world-class nursing professionals are trained through programs that combine the academic excellence offered at the acclaimed University of Calgary in Canada with the unique needs of Qatar.
