In partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) and Sidra Hospital, the University of Calgary in Qatar offers a course-based Master of Nursing program, focus in leadership. The course-based program is a two-year full time program requiring full time work release. Local nurses who graduate from the program will be qualified to take on leadership and management roles within the workplace.

The next intake is January 2018.

In partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), the University of Calgary in Qatar offers a course-based Master of Nursing - Advanced Practice degree program in oncology nursing. The course-based program is a two-year full time program requiring full time work release.

The next intake is January 2018 with a focus of oncology in support of the Qatar National Cancer Strategy. We anticipate a small intake which is dependent on available resources. Local nurses who graduate from the program will be qualified to take on advanced practice roles with HMC to contribute to evidence-informed, high quality cancer care. The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) offers a thesis-based program. Thesis-based students work closely with current UCQ research projects which align with their own research interests.

Students interested in the thesis-based program are encouraged to review the UCQ Research website for information on current projects and potential student funding. Students can also contact professoriate faculty for information on future grant applications, potential student funding, and research interests.

Students will be admitted in one of three ways:

  1. Fully Qualified: Student meets all criteria and will be registered in Academic Reading and Writing for September 2017 for progression to the Master of Nursing program for January 2018. Students will be required to achieve a “B” or greater in Academic Writing in order to begin the Master of Nursing program for January 2018.
  2. Partially Qualified: Student meets all criteria but lacks statistics, research, and/or English program prerequisites. Students will be considered for a term of full time study for September 2017 for progression into the Master of Nursing program for January 2018. Students will be required to achieve a “B” or greater in September courses in order to begin the Master of Nursing program for January 2018.
  3. Unqualified: Student below the minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (“B” average) will be considered for a full year of upgrading to progress into the Master of Nursing program for the following year. Students will be required to achieve a “B” or greater in all upgrading courses in order to proceed into the Master of Nursing program.

Admission requirements:

  1. A bachelor's/baccalaureate degree in nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution
  2. A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 ("B" average) or above. The diploma GPA for those students who have completed a post-diploma bachelor's degree will also be considered.
  3. Successful completion of one undergraduate course in research methodology (both qualitative and quantitative)*
  4. Successful completion of one undergraduate course in statistics
  5. Qatar citizenship or residency
  6. Qualify for sponsorship with HMC, PHCC, or Sidra
  7. English proficiency (any one of the following)
    • Completion of an undergraduate degree from a designated English speaking country
    • Completion of UCQ Bachelor of Nursing
    • Completion of UCQ English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program
    • Minimum IELTS score of 6.5 with no section less than 6.0 (academic version) or minimum TOEFL score of 86 with no section less than 20 (students can register for the IELTS exam at the College of the North Atlantic or the British Council)

Preferred attributes

  1. Preference will normally be given to Qatari applicants who meet admission requirements, although Qatari permanent residents are also encouraged to apply
  2. A preferred minimum of two years (full time or equivalent) clinical experience in a relevant nursing field
  3. Capacity to speak Arabic fluently

*For students who have not taken a recognized research methodology or statistics course, online courses are available. Please email grad@ucalgary.ca for more information.

Prospective students are required to apply for admission to the University of Calgary in Qatar. Recommendations for admission must be approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Calgary (Calgary, Canada).

Additional Pre-requisites

Applicants will be expected to achieve a minimum of a "B" in an undergraduate academic reading and writing course in the fall semester prior to official admission into the MN program. This requirement may be waived for native English speakers.

  • Copy of nursing degree certificate or parchment
  • Copy of nursing transcript and transcripts for ALL post-secondary institutions attended except for UCQ in English (and original language if applicable)
    • Transcripts must include number of credit hours and grades received
    • A statement of marks is required for all degrees from India
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of Qatar ID
  • CV or resume
    • List employment experience, including name of agency and clinical area/responsibilities and dates and employment hours
    • List any publications and/or scholarly works and any academic awards or achievements
    • List professional or community involvements you have had over the past five years
  • Two official references
    • Professional reference - to be completed by a supervisor or director
    • Academic reference - to be completed by an instructor (if unable to get an academic reference, UCQ will accept a second professional reference)

      Referees should email a copy of the Reference Letter Template to grad@ucalgary.ca. Alternatively, a paper copy can be submitted in a sealed envelope to the University of Calgary in Qatar, Al-Rayyan Campus in a sealed envelope.

  • Proof of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation at the basic rescuer or basic cardiac life support level “C” (ALS, PLS, ILS)
  • Statement of intent or personal statement (1-2 pages)
    • Describe your professional experience as a nurse to date and how this preparation has prepared you for future education
    • What are your reasons for seeking advanced preparation
    • What has led you to apply for this particular graduate program
    • What are your goals upon completion of the program
    • Any additional information you wish to provide to the admissions committee
      *This personal declaration will offer the admission committee evidence of your knowledge, commitment, and the experience that you hold as you pursue advanced preparation in nursing.

If you did not attend UCQ, you will also need to provide:

  • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS score 6.5 or TOEFL score of 86)
  • Detailed course outline of research methodology course(s) if taken
  • Detailed course outline of statistics course(s) if taken
