Master of Nursing, Course-Based Program (Leadership)

In partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) and Sidra Hospital, the University of Calgary in Qatar offers a course-based Master of Nursing with a focus in leadership. The course-based program is a two-year full time program requiring full time work release.

The next intake is January, 2016. The number of seats have yet to be determined and will depend on available resources. Local nurses who graduate from the program will be qualified to take on advanced roles to contribute to nursing leadership. Applications are open from February 1, 2015 to April 1, 2015.

Master of Nursing, Course-Based Program (Oncology) - To Be Confirmed

In partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), the University of Calgary in Qatar offers a course-based Master of Nursing - Advanced Practice degree program in oncology nursing. The course-based program is a two-year full time program requiring full time work release.

The next intake is January 2016 with a focus of oncology in support of the Qatar National Cancer Strategy. We anticipate a small intake which is dependent on available resources. Local nurses who graduate from the program will be qualified to take on advanced practice roles with HMC to contribute to evidence-informed, high quality cancer care. Open Studies Preparation

For students who do not meet the Master of Nursing admission criteria, including minimum GPA requirements, English proficiency, and/or statistics and research, upgrading opportunities may be available with the support of your sponsor. Once Open Studies preparatory courses have been completed, students are expected to move into the Master of Nursing program. To apply for Open Studies, students must submit a Master of Nursing application. Applications are open from February 1, 2015 to April 1, 2015.

Master of Nursing, Thesis-Based Program

The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) offers a thesis-based program. Thesis-based students work closely with current UCQ research projects which align with their own research interests.

Students interested in the thesis-based program are encouraged to review the UCQ Research website for information on current projects and potential student funding. Students can also contact professoriate faculty for information on future grant applications, potential student funding, and research interests.

Admission Requirements

Prospective students are required to apply for admission to the University of Calgary in Qatar. Recommendations for admission must be approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Calgary (Calgary, Canada).

Admission requirements:

  1. A bachelor's/baccalaureate degree in nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution
  2. A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 ("B" average) or above
  3. Successful completion of one undergraduate 3.0 credit course in research methodology (both qualitative and quantitative)
  4. Successful completion of one undergraduate 3.0 credit course in statistics
  5. Qatar citizenship or residency
  6. Qualify for sponsorship with HMC, PHCC, or Sidra
  7. English proficiency (any one of the following)
    • Completion of an undergraduate degree from a designated English speaking country
    • Completion of UCQ Bachelor of Nursing
    • Completion of UCQ English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program
    • Minimum IELTS score of 7.0 or minimum TOEFL score of 80

Preferred attributes

  1. Preference will normally be given to Qatari applicants who meet admission requirements, although Qatari permanent residents are also encouraged to apply
  2. A preferred minimum of two years (full time or equivalent) clinical experience in a relevant nursing field
  3. Capacity to speak Arabic fluently
  4. Successful applicants would be required to sign a scholarship contract with HMC including commitment to take up an assigned Clinical Nursing Specialist post for three years upon graduation (benefits packages are included)

Required Documentation Checklist

  • Copy of nursing degree certificate or parchment
  • Copy of nursing transcript and transcripts for ALL post-secondary institutions attended in English (and original language if applicable)
    • Transcripts must include number of credit hours and grades received
    • A statement of marks is required for all degrees from India
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of Qatar ID
  • CV or resume
    • List employment experience, including name of agency and clinical area/responsibilities and dates and employment hours
    • List any publications and/or scholarly works and any academic awards or achievements
    • List professional or community involvements you have had over the past five years
  • Professional Reference – to be completed by a supervisor or director

    Referees should email a copy of the Reference Letter Template directly to Melissa Manuel at mmanuel@ucalgary.edu.qa. Alternatively, a paper copy can be submitted in a sealed envelope to the University of Calgary in Qatar, Al-Rayyan Campus in a sealed envelope.
  • Reference – academic (preferred, but will accept a second professional reference)

  • Proof of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation at the basic rescuer or basic cardiac life support level “C” (ALS, PLS, ILS)
  • Statement of intent or personal statement (1-2 pages)
    • Describe your professional experience as a nurse to date and how this preparation has prepared you for future education
    • What are your reasons for seeking advanced preparation
    • What has led you to apply for this particular graduate program
    • What are your goals upon completion of the program
    • Any additional information you wish to provide to the admissions committee
      *This personal declaration will offer the admission committee evidence of your knowledge, commitment, and the experience that you hold as you pursue advanced preparation in nursing.

If you did not attend UCQ, you will also need to provide:

  • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS score 7.0 or TOEFL score of 80)
  • Detailed course outline of research methodology course(s) if taken
  • Detailed course outline of statistics course(s) if taken
