The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) hosted an engaging Welcome Back event for all students on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at the multipurpose hall.

The semi-annual event was held around the theme of Winter Wonderland and had nearly 120 people in attendance.

The event helped kick-off the semester by bringing students together to promote a sense of community. After a 15-minute presentation, Dr. Deborah White, UCQ Dean and Professor, gave a welcome back speech and Mr. Hassan Kandar, Director of Student Services, offered some words of advice.

“I’m thrilled to welcome you back to campus for the 2023 spring semester at the University of Calgary in Qatar,” Dr. White said in her speech.

“Each semester brings new challenges, but each semester also offers new, potentially life-changing opportunities - and you just have to be deliberate in pursuing those opportunities.” Dr. Deborah added.

While encouraging everyone to take advantage of the resources and support the university has to offer, Mr. Kandar advised students to create a plan to make the most of the semester and follow it tenaciously from the first day of classes to the end of finals week. “Planning and goal setting will make a world difference in your mental health and performance as you navigate the academic year,” Mr. Kandar said.

The anticipated event had a wide variety of food, games, and activities with the aim of beginning the semester on a cheerful note. There were three giant game stations, face painting, winter-themed sweet stations, hot chocolate with all the toppings, a photo booth and lunch boxes for all to enjoy.

The Welcome Back event offered an opportunity for UCQ students to engage with one another while helping build their morale and setting a positive tone for the semester.
